Project overview
Gutters that overflow above a timber deck cause more damage than most homeowners realize — the constant wetting is what grays and lifts the boards.
We cleared the run, flushed the downspout that had backed up at the elbow, and confirmed flow before rinsing the deck down.
-
Trough cleared over the full deck span
-
Blocked downspout elbow cleared
-
Flow confirmed at the discharge point
-
Deck boards rinsed clean afterwards
Protecting the deck boards under the work
The run here sits directly above a timber deck with furniture on it, and the reason the owner called was visible on the boards rather than in the gutter. Where a trough overflows above decking it does not soak the whole surface evenly — it lands in a line, and that line grays off, raises its grain and starts to lift while the boards either side still look sound.
Because the debris was wet and the drop was onto finished timber, nothing was allowed to fall free. The trough was emptied into buckets and the buckets were lowered rather than carried down a ladder, and the deck under the working position was covered before anything came out.
The trough itself held a dark, saturated leaf mush rather than loose litter, which is what happens when a gutter has been standing water for a while. That mush was lifted out in handfuls, and the trough was then flushed to move the fine sediment that always sits under it — the grit layer that never comes out with the leaves and is what actually holds water once the leaves are gone.
The downspout was flushed and watched at the bottom. On a run above a deck the discharge point matters as much as the trough: water leaving at the base of a post or onto the boards themselves will keep doing the same damage even with a perfectly clear gutter above it.
The deck was rinsed and the furniture put back before we finished.
The problem, and the result
Before: Repeated overflow soaking a timber deck.
After: Clear run and a dry deck.
