Project overview

A storm had brought down small branches and a heavy load of needles across this roofline, and several sections of trough were completely bridged over.

We cleared the branch material by hand, cleaned the trough beneath it and flushed every outlet, then checked the run for any sections knocked out of pitch by the impact.

  • Run checked for storm-shifted pitch

Clearing storm-dropped branch debris in winter

This was a post-storm call rather than a seasonal clean, and the debris shows it. What was in the trough was not accumulated leaf fall — it was branch material brought down in one event, including a whole conifer limb lying in the gutter with smaller wood and bark packed around it. You can see it in the photographs, along with the snow still on the ground.

Rigid storm debris blocks differently from leaves. A branch does not fill a trough; it bridges it and then acts as a dam that everything else collects behind, so the run can be almost empty for most of its length and completely stopped at one point. Finding that point is most of the job.

It is also the reason this kind of blockage is urgent in cold weather rather than something to book for spring. Water held behind a dam in freezing conditions expands as it freezes, and ice in a trough will spread hangers and split seams in a way that a summer blockage never does. An ice load on a run that is already carrying a limb is how gutters come off fascias in winter.

The wood was lifted out by hand and taken off the roof, the packed material behind it was cleared, and the trough was then flushed from the high end so the fines went out through the outlet.

Both downspouts were run and watched at ground level. After a storm the outlet is worth checking specifically for wood fragments, which lodge in the first elbow and stay there through the rest of the winter.

The problem, and the result

Before: Branch debris bridging the trough after a storm.
After: Clear run with pitch verified after impact.
