Project overview

The owners were cleaning this house three times a year and wanted that reduced. We cleaned and flushed the whole system first, then fitted perforated aluminum guards along the front and side elevations.

The guards were cut to the gutter profile and secured without lifting the first course of shingles, so nothing about the roof warranty was affected.

  • Rain-flow tested over the roof edge

Fitting perforated guard along a front elevation

The product here is perforated aluminum panel — a flat sheet with punched round holes that sits over the mouth of the trough. It is not the cheapest guard on the market and it is not the most heavily marketed, but for the debris that actually falls on Montgomery roofs it is usually the right answer. Pine needles are the local problem, and a fine mesh screen blocks with needles while a perforated panel of the right hole size lets water through and gives the needles nowhere to key into.

Fitting starts with cleaning, not with the guard. Panel was only laid once the full run had been cleared and flushed and the flow checked, because a guard fitted over an existing debris layer seals the problem in and makes the next clean a removal job.

Each panel was cut to the gutter profile, tucked under the first shingle course at the back and fixed down along the front lip — the fixings are visible at regular centers in the photographs. Fixing to the front lip rather than to the roof matters: nothing is driven through the shingle, and the panel can be lifted later for inspection without disturbing the roof covering.

Panels were lapped in the direction of flow rather than butted, so water crossing a join runs over the top instead of finding the edge and dropping behind the trough.

It is worth being straight about what a guard does. This keeps bulk debris out of the trough and turns a twice-yearly clean-out into an occasional check. It does not make a gutter maintenance-free, and any installer who says otherwise is selling rather than advising.

The problem, and the result

Before: Three cleanings a year under moderate tree cover.
After: Guarded system with a much longer service interval.
