Project overview

Low-pitch roofs shed slowly, so debris sits rather than washing to the outlet. This run had developed a moss layer over a compacted bed of needles.

The trough was cleared by hand and flushed, and the roof edge was cleared so the next rain would not immediately reload it.

Low pitch, slow water, thick moss

A low-pitch roof sheds slowly, and slow water is the reason this run had moss rather than leaves. On a steep plane rain arrives at the gutter fast and carries litter over the edge with it. On a shallow one the water moves at walking pace, drops most of what it is carrying in the bottom courses and along the trough, and leaves a permanently damp surface behind. Moss establishes in that.

The photographs show it on the outbuilding roof below as well as in the trough, which is a useful tell — when moss is growing on the roof surface itself and not just in the gutter, the gutter will refill quickly however well it is cleaned, because the source is above it.

Moss came out by hand. It lifts in sheets when it is wet and shatters into fragments when it is dry, and fragments are worse than the mat because they wash straight to the outlet and pack there. Working it wet, in sections, and taking each section off the roof rather than sliding it along the trough keeps that from happening.

Under the moss was the usual fine sediment layer, which was flushed to the outlet rather than picked out. The downspouts were run and watched at the bottom until the water was clear rather than brown.

On a roof with this profile the honest advice is a shorter cleaning interval than average, or guards, rather than the same annual visit that suits a steeper roof in an open position.

The problem, and the result

Before: Moss and compacted needle bed on a slow-shedding roof.
After: Clear trough and a clean roof edge.
