Project overview
Mature trees overhang this roofline on two sides, and the trough was carrying a continuous bed of decayed leaf matter with standing water behind it.
All three runs were cleared and flushed. We also pointed out where the pitch had flattened, which is why water was sitting rather than draining once the debris was gone.

Clearing a gutter that sits directly under canopy
This gutter runs a few feet from mature tree trunks with the canopy directly overhead, which is about the hardest position a trough can be in. It does not receive the light seasonal drop that an open roof gets — it receives everything the tree sheds, continuously, plus whatever the wind brings down off the higher branches.
What comes out of a gutter in that position is not just leaf litter. The photographs show the reality: twigs, bark, seed cases and windblown rubbish mixed through the organic material. That mixture is why flushing alone does not work here. Rigid debris jams at the outlet and forms a frame that the finer material then packs solid behind.
It was cleared by hand from the far end back to the downspout, with the rigid pieces taken out first so nothing was pushed ahead of the work. Everything went into buckets and off the roof, rather than being dropped into the beds below to wash back in.
The outlets were then cleared from below as well as flushed from above. A downspout fed from under heavy canopy usually holds a plug in the vertical run, and a hose from the top will simply pool on it and give a false reading.
For a gutter in this position the useful conversation is about interval rather than method. Two visits a year is realistic under a canopy like this one; one is not, and guards do less than people hope when the debris arriving is twigs rather than needles.
The problem, and the result
Before: Decayed leaf bed plus standing water from lost pitch.
After: Clear runs and a diagnosed low spot.
