Project overview
Booked deliberately late in the season so the leaf drop had finished, which means one visit instead of two.
The trough came out full of packed leaf litter and the outlet was completely blocked at the drop. Both were cleared and the run was flushed and checked.
-
Timed after the leaf drop finished
-
Packed litter removed along the full run
-
Blocked outlet cleared at the drop
-
Full flush and flow check
A front-elevation clean timed before the winter rains
This one was booked deliberately late in the leaf fall and before the sustained winter rain, which is the right order and not the one most people choose. Clearing a gutter in early autumn feels productive and simply means it fills again while the trees are still dropping. Clearing it once the canopy is bare gets you through the wet months with a run that actually works.
The trough was carrying dark, wet, packed leaf material rather than loose litter — you can see it in the photographs. That is what a gutter looks like when it has been full through several rain events: the leaves break down, bind together and stop behaving like individual pieces. It comes out in slabs by hand, not with a blower.
The front elevation is also the run with the most consequence when it fails. It discharges over the entry, the porch and the path, and an overflowing front gutter in freezing weather puts water exactly where people walk. That is a different order of problem from an overflow into a back bed.
Debris came out into buckets, the trough was flushed to move the sediment underneath, and the outlet was watched at ground level to confirm the downspout was taking the flow and discharging away from the porch footing rather than beside it.
The path and beds under the working position were rinsed off before we finished, which matters more on a front elevation than anywhere else on the house.
The problem, and the result
Before: Full trough and a completely blocked outlet.
After: Clear system heading into the wet season.
