Project overview

By the time we were called, the gutter had been holding enough soil and moisture long enough to grow established plants along its length. That weight had already begun to pull the run away from the fascia.

Everything came out down to bare metal, and we flagged two sections where the hangers had lost their grip and needed replacing before the next wet season.

When a gutter has turned into a planter

There is a threshold past which a gutter stops being a blocked gutter and becomes a growing medium, and this run was well past it. The photographs show established plants with root systems, not seedlings — moss, grass and broadleaf weeds growing out of several inches of composted leaf litter that had been building for years.

That changes the method completely. You cannot flush a rooted mat, and you should not try to drag it out in one length, because the roots have knitted into the seams and around the hanger heads and they will take the sealant with them. It has to be broken up and lifted in sections, root plate by root plate, working the material away from the joints rather than through them.

It also changes what you expect to find underneath. A trough that has held wet compost against bare metal for that long is usually corroding from the inside, and the seams are the first thing to go. With the growth out, the run was checked along its length for pinholes, split seams and hanger fixings that had rusted through — the things that were invisible while the soil was in place and that will start leaking the moment water can move again.

The downspouts had to be cleared from the bottom as well as flushed from the top, because compost that has been washing down for years builds a hard plug at the first elbow that a hose will not shift.

Once the run was empty it was flushed and watched. A gutter in this condition is worth reassessing afterwards rather than simply signing off — sometimes a clean is the fix, and sometimes the clean is what reveals that the metal is finished.

The problem, and the result

Before: Established plant growth and soil load in the trough.
After: Bare-metal clean and a clear repair plan.
