Project overview

The original run along this rear elevation had rusted through in several places and the trough was sitting almost level, so water stood in it long after every rain. Rather than patch metal that was already failing, we took the whole run down.

New trough was set at a proper fall toward the outlet and hung on hidden hangers into sound fascia. The last photograph shows the fresh section going in over the flat roof section, where the old gutter had been leaking directly onto the wall below.

  • Failed run removed and disposed of

  • Fascia checked and made good before hanging

  • New trough set at correct fall toward the downspout

  • System flood-tested before hand-over

Taking the old run down, and setting the new fall

The first job was getting the failed metal off the fascia without doing damage on the way down. The old trough was held on spikes driven through the front lip into the rafter tails, and spikes that have been in place for years rarely come out clean — the ferrule seizes and the head shears. Each one was backed out slowly and the holes in the fascia were filled before anything new went up.

With the run off, the fascia board was finally visible along its whole length. That is the part of a replacement worth paying attention to: a trough is only as sound as the timber it hangs from, and a board that has been sitting under a leaking gutter for several seasons is often soft at the top edge where the water tracked back. Sound sections were left alone, and the surface was made good so the new hangers had solid material to bite into.

The new trough was set to fall toward the outlet rather than hung parallel to the roof edge. That distinction matters more than it sounds. A gutter hung level looks correct from the ground and still holds a shallow film of water along its whole length, which is exactly what rusted the previous run from the inside out. We string a line from the high end to the outlet and hang to the line, not to the fascia.

Hidden hangers were used instead of spikes. They clip over the front bead and screw through the back of the trough into the fascia, which spreads the load along the run and leaves nothing punched through the face to leak later. The last of the photographs shows the fresh section going in above the flat roof, where the old gutter had been discharging straight down the wall.

Before we left, the run was flooded from the far end with a hose and watched. Water should arrive at the outlet and keep moving, with nothing standing behind the joints and nothing weeping at the end cap.

The problem, and the result

Before: Rusted, level trough holding standing water.
After: New correctly pitched run, no standing water.
