Project overview

The rear extension had been built without any gutter at all, so runoff was landing directly against the back wall and the patio below.

We measured the roof plane, sized the trough and downspout for the load, and hung a new run tied into the existing system. The final photograph shows the downspout being fixed off at the corner.

Adding a run and a downspout to a rear extension

The extension at the back of this house had been built without a gutter on the new roof plane, which is more common than it should be. Water was leaving the edge as a sheet, landing at the base of the wall and working into the ground directly against the footing — the sort of thing that costs nothing to fix at the roof and a great deal to fix at the foundation.

The work started with where the water needed to go, not where the gutter would look tidiest. There is a deck below and made ground beside it, so the outlet position was chosen to discharge clear of both. Setting a downspout on the wrong side of an extension just relocates the problem to somewhere less visible.

The run was rolled to length so the straight has no joints, then hung to a string line with fall toward the chosen outlet. The photographs show the working position: pole and ladder from the deck, and the new trough going up with the hangers set behind the front bead.

Tying a new run into an existing roofline is the part that repays care. The new gutter has to sit under the drip line of the shingle course above so water cannot track behind the trough, and it has to meet the older run at a level that lets water pass rather than pond at the junction.

With the trough hung and the downspout and elbows fitted, the whole plane was run with a hose and the discharge watched at ground level to confirm it was leaving the building rather than pooling beside it.

The problem, and the result

Before: Extension built with no gutter, runoff hitting the wall.
After: New sized run carrying water away from the building.
