Project overview

This stucco home needed the full perimeter done, and the owners wanted the cleanest possible line against the white render. Every straight run was rolled on site to its exact length so there is not a single field joint along any elevation.

Corners were cut, joined and sealed by hand, and downspouts were placed to carry water well clear of the foundation on both gable ends.

  • Every run rolled on site to exact length

  • Hand-cut and sealed miters at each corner

  • Hidden hangers throughout, no visible fasteners

  • Downspouts routed clear of the foundation

Rolling and hanging a full perimeter in one visit

Seamless gutter is formed on site. A coil of coated aluminum is fed through a roll-former on the truck and comes out as a single continuous length cut to the run, which is why there are no joints along the straights — only at corners and end caps, and those are the parts that can be properly sealed and inspected. On a full perimeter like this one, that removes a dozen or more potential leak points compared with sectional stock.

Measuring comes before rolling, and it is the part that decides whether the job works. Each elevation was measured for length and for where the water needs to leave, and the outlets were positioned to suit the ground below rather than spaced evenly for the look of it. A downspout put where it is convenient on the wall and inconvenient on the ground just moves a drainage problem from the roof to the foundation.

Every straight was hung to a string line with fall toward its outlet. Hidden hangers were set at close centers, and closer again on the elevations that take the most volume, because a long run carrying the discharge from a large roof plane is holding real weight during an Alabama downpour.

Corners were mitered and sealed, end caps were crimped and sealed, and the sealant was given time before anything was tested. The photographs show the finished white trough against the stucco, with the hangers set back out of sight behind the front bead.

The whole perimeter was then run with a hose, elevation by elevation, and each downspout watched at ground level until it discharged cleanly away from the wall.

The problem, and the result

Before: Aged sectional gutter leaking at multiple joints.
After: Full seamless perimeter with no straight-run joints.

What This Project Involved

Aluminum rolled to length on site, so a straight run has no joints at all to leak.

Gutter Installation

New gutters measured, sized and pitched for the way rain actually falls in central Alabama.

Gutter Repair

Leaking seams, sagging runs and pulled hangers fixed — usually for a third of the cost of replacing.
