Project overview
The run along this boundary sits under a line of mature trees and fills faster than the rest of the house combined. By the time we arrived the trough held a continuous bed of packed leaves.
The section was hand-cleared end to end and the outlet flushed. We recommended putting this elevation on a shorter cleaning cycle than the rest of the property.
-
Packed leaf bed removed end to end
-
Outlet flushed and confirmed flowing
-
Access managed over a narrow boundary strip
-
Shorter service cycle recommended for this run
Leaf clear-out where a hedge overhangs the gutter
This run has a mature hedge and a boundary fence tight against it, which changes the job in two ways. The gutter collects from the hedge as well as the roof, so it fills from both sides; and there is nowhere below to stand a ladder square, so most of the length has to be reached from the roof side.
Autumn leaf fall from a broadleaf hedge is bulkier and lighter than pine straw, and it behaves differently in the trough. It bridges rather than compacts — a layer forms across the top of the gutter, water finds its way underneath for a while, and the run looks like it is still working right up until the point it stops completely. The photographs show that bridging along the length of the trough.
It also means the outlet is usually the first thing to go. A single wet leaf across a downspout opening is enough to start a mat, so the outlets were cleared first, then the trough was worked back from there in sections.
Because the hedge is going to keep dropping, we cleared the loose material sitting on the shingle courses above the gutter as well. That is the load that arrives in the trough with the next rain, and taking it off buys a few more weeks of clear flow.
Downspouts were flushed until they ran clear and the debris was bagged and taken away rather than tipped behind the fence, which is where a lot of it ends up washing straight back.
The problem, and the result
Before: Continuous packed leaf bed in the boundary run.
After: Clear trough and a realistic maintenance interval.
