Project overview

Two roof planes drain onto this single rear run, which doubles the debris load and leaves the deck below directly in the firing line whenever the gutter overflows.

We cleared the trough, flushed the outlet and re-secured two hangers that had begun to pull away from the fascia under the weight of standing debris.

  • Both roof planes cleared at the valley

  • Full trough clean-out and flush

  • Two loose hangers re-secured

  • Deck swept and rinsed before leaving

Working a two-level roofline over a deck

The complication on this one was access rather than the debris itself. The run sits above a raised deck, and the roof steps down in two levels, so the ladder cannot simply be set once and worked along. Footings were moved several times to keep the ladder standing on the deck boards rather than leaning against the gutter, which is how most bent troughs and popped hangers happen during a clean.

Where a lower roof feeds a higher one, or where a valley discharges onto a shorter run, the debris does not distribute evenly. It concentrates at the point where the water lands. The photographs show that pattern clearly: the heaviest packing is not spread along the whole trough but sits below where the upper level sheds.

That is also where a clean is most worth doing carefully. A short section of blocked trough directly under a valley will overflow in every storm while the rest of the run stays dry, and the overflow lands in one place — here, straight onto the deck rail and the boards below. Boards that get repeatedly soaked in one spot gray off and lift long before the rest of the deck does.

Debris came out into buckets, both levels were flushed, and the outlets were checked from the bottom to make sure the lower run was actually taking water from the upper one rather than backing up at the junction.

The deck was swept and rinsed before we left, and the furniture was put back where it started.

The problem, and the result

Before: Overflow onto the deck from a double-loaded run.
After: Clear run and re-secured hangers.
