Fall vs Spring Gutter Cleaning: What's the Difference?

People often assume the two annual cleanings are the same job done twice. They are not. They remove different debris and they protect against different failures.

Understanding the difference is also how you decide which one to skip if you are only going to do one — and in Montgomery, that answer is clearer than you might think.

The Autumn Cleaning: Clearing the Bulk

Autumn is the heavy one. Leaves, pine straw and seed pods come down together, and the timing matters: too early and you clean before the trees have finished, too late and the first winter rains have already packed everything into a solid mat.

In the Montgomery area, late November into early December is usually the right window. The purpose is volume — you are removing the material that would otherwise sit in the trough through the wettest part of the year, holding water against the metal and freezing on the handful of nights we drop below freezing.

If you only do one cleaning a year in central Alabama, do the autumn one. It has more to remove and more to prevent.

The Spring Cleaning: Fine Debris and Damage Checks

Spring debris is different — finer and stickier. Oak catkins, maple samaras, pollen and blown-in grit form a paste that coats the bottom of the trough and clogs downspout outlets without ever filling the gutter.

The spring visit is also the diagnostic one. Winter storms move things: hangers loosen, seams open, sections shift out of pitch. Coming out of storm season, this is when we find most of the storm damage homeowners had not noticed, and when a small gutter repair is still small.

What Each Visit Is Really For

Two visits, two jobs.

  • Autumn — remove bulk leaf and pine debris before the wet season

  • Autumn — confirm every downspout flows before heavy sustained rain

  • Spring — clear fine sticky debris and pollen paste from troughs and outlets

  • Spring — inspect for winter storm damage, loosened hangers and lost pitch

Montgomery's Wet Season Argues for Autumn

Our rainfall is not evenly spread. Winter and early spring bring long, saturating systems, and summer brings short violent downpours. A gutter that goes into December packed with pine straw spends the wettest months overflowing behind itself into the fascia.

That is why we push the autumn visit hardest. It is not that spring does not matter — it is that the consequences of skipping autumn arrive faster.

Or Stop Choosing

Most homes here genuinely need three or more visits, not two. We cover how to work out your own number in how often should you clean your gutters.

If the ladder work is the part you would rather avoid, we schedule both visits and simply turn up — call 334-231-5941 or read more about our gutter cleaning service.

Building a Simple Annual Routine

The households that never have a gutter emergency are not the ones with the best gutters. They are the ones with a routine, and the routine is short.

Late autumn: full clean, downspouts flushed, everything hauled away. This is the non-negotiable visit and it should land after the leaves have finished falling but before the sustained winter rain sets in.

Late spring: second clean focused on fine debris, plus a proper look at hangers, seams and pitch after a winter of storms. Anything found here is still small.

After every severe storm: a five-minute look from the ground at the gutter line, the downspouts and the ground beneath them. You are looking for new dips, new gaps and new pooling.

Once a year, ideally at the spring visit: check where each downspout discharges. Extensions get knocked out of place by mowers, kids and landscapers constantly, and a downspout emptying against the foundation undoes everything else on this list.
