The standard advice is twice a year. It is a reasonable starting point and it is wrong for a lot of Montgomery homes.
What actually sets the schedule is what is growing over your roof, and central Alabama grows a great deal of pine.
The Baseline: Twice a Year
Late spring, once the oaks have finished dropping seed pods and catkins, and late autumn once the leaves are down. That covers a house with a couple of mature trees at a sensible distance.
If your house has no overhanging trees at all, once a year in late autumn is genuinely enough — though it is still worth a look after any severe storm.
Pine does not have a season. It sheds all year, and that is what catches Montgomery homeowners out.

Why Pines Change the Math
Loblolly and longleaf pines drop needles continuously, with the heaviest fall in autumn but a steady contribution every month. Pine straw is also the worst possible debris for a gutter: it mats into a dense felt that holds water rather than letting it through, and it packs into downspout outlets far more effectively than leaves.
Homes with pines directly over the roofline generally need three to four cleanings a year. Homes with pines nearby but not overhanging usually need three. This is the single most common reason a Montgomery homeowner's gutters overflow despite being 'cleaned last year'.
Set Your Own Schedule
Match your house to the closest description below.
-
No overhanging trees — once a year, late autumn
-
Deciduous trees nearby — twice a year, late spring and late autumn
-
Pines near or over the roof — three to four times a year
-
Any home, any year — plus one check after every severe storm
Signs You Have Waited Too Long
Water sheeting over the front edge in rain, birds nesting in the trough, plants sprouting from the gutter, or visible sag in a run are all signs you are past due. So is a downspout that is dry during a downpour while the gutter above it is full.
If you have hit any of those, the visit will take longer and cost more than a routine one — see our breakdown of gutter cleaning costs in Montgomery.
Can You Clean Less Often?
Yes, with the right guards. A properly sized micro-mesh system stops the overwhelming majority of pine straw and leaves, and takes most homes from four visits a year down to a rinse and check every couple of years. Whether that pays back depends entirely on your tree cover — we go through the honest arithmetic in are gutter guards worth it.
If you would rather not think about it at all, we will put your house on a scheduled gutter cleaning cycle and come when it is due. Call 334-231-5941.
Timing Matters as Much as Frequency
Two cleanings at the wrong times are worth less than two at the right ones, and the right ones are set by the trees rather than the calendar.
For the autumn visit, wait until the leaf drop has genuinely finished. In the Montgomery area that is usually late November into early December — clean in early October and you will simply have to do it again. The one thing you do not want is to go into the winter rains with a full trough.
For the spring visit, aim for after the oaks have dropped their catkins and the pollen has largely washed out, which is generally late April into May. Going too early means catching the tail of the drop and missing the material that matters.
Then add the unscheduled ones. After any storm with real wind, take five minutes to look at the gutter line from the ground. Storms move debris in bulk and they also move gutters, and both are far cheaper to deal with the same week than the following season.
